Q & A

Can I Use A Side Mount Opener With Extension Springs On My Door?

By Steve Penn

You can, but in most cases you can only use a side mounted garage door opener on your garage door if certain conditions exist and the the required parts can be installed.

The primary requirements are that side mounted garage door openers require torsion springs, at least 3” of clearance above the torsion bar, at least 12 inches of side-room next to the garage door opening, and an electric outlet within 6 feet.

There are a number of other factors that can determine whether you can install a side-mounted garage door opener and a professional should review your situation in person.

If you live in the Cincinnati area and are looking for options to the traditional garage door opener, give us a all at (513) 821-5095 and we’ll stop by.

How Much Clearance Do I Need To Install A Garage Door Opener?

By Steve Penn

If you’re thinking about installing a new garage door opener for your home or business in Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, or Southeast Indiana, one of the most important questions to consider is clearance—how much space you need for the opener to work properly. It may not be the most exciting part of your project, but getting the clearance right is essential to a safe and successful installation. How Much Clearance Do I Need To Install A Garage Door Opener

Let’s break it down in simple terms.

Basic Overhead Clearance Requirements

At a minimum, you’ll need at least 2 inches of space between the top of your garage door and the ceiling when the door is in its highest position (what’s called the “open” or “travel” position). This small gap is necessary to allow the opener’s rail and trolley system to operate without interference as the door opens and closes.

Keep in mind—just because your garage door fits doesn’t mean your opener will. The opener system takes up extra space that your current setup may not be accounting for.

Backroom Clearance Is Also Important

In addition to overhead clearance, you’ll also need around 10 feet of backroom clearance—that’s the space from the inside front wall (where the garage door starts) to the back of your garage. This is where the opener rail gets installed and where the motor unit will hang.

For a standard setup, this distance gives the opener enough room to move the door up and down smoothly. Without enough backroom clearance, the opener simply can’t function properly—or safely.

Low Ceiling or Limited Space? Don’t Worry.

What if your garage has low ceilings or not enough space overhead? That’s actually more common than you might think, especially in older homes or detached garages.

The good news is, there are side-mounted garage door openers—also known as wall-mount or jackshaft openers—designed specifically for these situations. Instead of being installed on the ceiling, these units are mounted on the wall next to the garage door. They’re compact, reliable, and a great solution for garages with height restrictions.

If you’re unsure whether your garage meets the space requirements, give us a call. At Cincinnati Door & Window, we’ve seen just about every setup imaginable over the past 30+ years, and we can help you figure out the best opener for your space—whether it’s traditional or low-clearance.

Why Clearance Matters

Getting your measurements right is about more than convenience—it’s about safety and performance. A garage door opener that’s installed with too little clearance can cause stress on the motor, misalign the track, or even damage the door over time. Worse, it can lead to system failure or injury.

That’s why having your opener professionally installed by experienced technicians is key. We’ll make sure everything is aligned, secure, and working exactly the way it should.

My Garage Door Won’t Open – Is That A Sensor Issue?

By Steve Penn

It is probably not a sensor issue. The sensors are designed to help keep the garage door from completely closing and crushing someone – even a pet.

On most garage door systems, they have no effect on the up-cycle of the garage door.

It’s likely some other issue with the system – either the garage door itself or the opener.

If you’re in the Greater Cincinnati area and your garage door will not open, give us a call at (513) 821-5095.

Adding Safety Sensors To An Old Garage Door In Cincinnati

By Steve Penn

Sensors have been required by law since 1993, so if your garage door is older than that, no, you’ll not be able to add safety sensors.

Here’s why – Garage Door manufacturers no longer make upgrade kits for garage door openers that are that old.
