Do I Need Springs On A Garage Door If I Have An Automatic Door Opener?

By Steve Penn

Yes, you still need proper garage door springs even if you have a garage door opener. Here’s why:

  1. Counterbalance: Garage door springs play a critical role in counterbalancing the weight of the door. Without the springs, the door would be incredibly heavy to lift, whether by hand or by the opener. The springs make it possible for both people and the opener to lift the door with minimal effort.
  2. Safety: If the garage door opener were to fail or if there was a power outage, you’d need to be able to open and close the door manually. Without springs, this would be extremely difficult due to the weight of the door. Additionally, a door without springs can come crashing down with significant force, which can be dangerous.
  3. Reduced Wear on the Opener: Without springs to counterbalance the door’s weight, the garage door opener would bear the full burden of lifting and lowering the door. This would significantly reduce the lifespan of the opener and could cause it to fail prematurely.
  4. Smooth Operation: Springs help in ensuring the smooth operation of the door as it goes up and down. They reduce the jerking motion that could otherwise occur without them.

There are different types of garage door springs, including torsion springs and extension springs. It’s essential to ensure they are correctly sized and installed for your specific door’s weight and size.

Over time, these springs can wear out and break. If that happens, it’s crucial to get them replaced promptly by a professional, as the tension held in these springs can make them dangerous to work with without the proper tools and training.

The bottom-line is this; the springs are one of the most important elements in the correct and safe operation of garage doors. If you have any issues with your garage door, and reside in the Greater Cincinnati area, give us a call at (513) 821-5095.

One Of The Cables Came Off My Garage Door – Is That Something I Can Fix Or Should I Call A Professional?

By Steve Penn

Garage door cables work in conjunction with the springs to lift the entire weight of the garage door.

Whether a homeowner should attempt to repair a broken garage door cable depends on several factors, including their comfort level with DIY repairs, their understanding of garage door mechanisms, and the tools they have available. Here are some considerations to keep in mind:

1. Safety Concerns:

  • Garage doors are heavy and are under a lot of tension due to the springs. Some garage doors weigh up to 400 pounds so a misstep can result in injury.
  • The cable itself is also under tension, and if not handled properly, it can whip out and cause injury.
  • Incorrectly repairing the cable could lead to an unstable or unsafe door, risking potential future injury or damage.

2. Knowledge and Experience:

  • If a homeowner has never dealt with garage door repairs before, they might be unaware of the intricacies and potential pitfalls.
  • Some knowledge of mechanical systems is beneficial.

3. Necessary Tools:

  • Specific tools may be needed to safely replace or adjust the cable.
  • Without the correct tools, the repair might be more difficult or dangerous.

4. Time Commitment:

  • If done for the first time, the repair might take longer than anticipated.
  • There’s also the potential need to pause and seek out additional resources or guidance.

5. Cost Savings vs. Professional Repair:

  • While doing it yourself might save money upfront, if the repair is not done correctly, it could lead to more expensive repairs down the road.
  • A professional might offer a warranty on their work.

6. Identification of the Problem:

  • A broken cable might be a symptom of another underlying issue (e.g., misaligned tracks, worn pulleys, or a broken spring). If you replace just the cable without addressing the root cause, the problem might reoccur.

7. Professional Diagnosis:

  • Even if you decide to repair the door yourself, getting a professional opinion on what’s wrong can be invaluable. They might point out issues you hadn’t considered.

If you’re confident in your skills, have the necessary tools, and have done thorough research or have prior experience, you might choose to repair the cable yourself.

However, given the safety risks and the potential complexity of the job, many homeowners find it’s worth the peace of mind to hire a professional to handle garage door repairs. Always prioritize safety above all else.

If you aren’t sure of what you are doing, don’t try to repair a broken cable…. call a professional garage door technician.

It is still cheaper and less painful than a trip to the emergency room.

If you need help, give us a call at (513) 821-5095.

Nylon Rollers Versus Steel Rollers On Garage Doors On Homes In Greater Cincinnati

By Steve Penn

When it comes to rollers on garage door systems, you have two choices – Nylon or Steel.

Steel rollers can be noisy and they can rust. Sometimes that can result in a roller head snapping off. You might have these rollers on your garage doors today.

Nylon rollers, on the other hand, are extremely quiet. The actual manufacturing process is not 100% nylon either. It’s is a steel roller surrounded by nylon. So you get the best of both solutions.

If you want to replace the garage door rollers at your home or business in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky, give us a call at (513) 821-5095.
