Q & A

Find A Professional Garage Door Installer or Dealer In The Cincinnati Area

By Steve Penn

We suggest three ways to find a garage door company that does good work and that you can trust (for that matter, do this for any contractor).

One, get a referral from family or friends.

Two, check the Better Business Bureau.

And three, join Angie’s List. It might be the best $15 you ever spent.

Be sure to do due diligence in your research because there are a lot of folks out there with a website and a cell phone who make themselves look like a real garage door installer….. when they are not.

If you live in the Cincinnati area and need a new garage door or repairs to existing doors, give us a call at (513) 821-5095 for a free, no sales-hype estimate.

Can I Install My Own Garage Door Or Should I Hire A Professional?

By Steve Penn

When it comes to home improvement projects, many homeowners in Warren County and Butler County, Ohio, take pride in doing the work themselves.Should You Install A New Garage Door Yourself or Hire A Professional To Do it?

However, when it comes to installing a garage door, it’s important to recognize that this is not your average DIY project. Garage door installation involves a significant amount of precision, expertise, and safety precautions. Here’s why you should strongly consider hiring a professional, like the trusted experts at Cincinnati Door & Window, who have been serving the area for over 30 years.

The Complexity of Garage Door Installation

Garage doors are large, heavy, and comprised of numerous parts that need to be assembled and installed correctly. This is not just about bolting a few panels together; it involves intricate work that includes connecting and tensioning the springs, aligning the tracks, and ensuring that the opener is installed properly. Each of these steps requires specialized knowledge and tools that most homeowners simply don’t have on hand.

Installing a garage door incorrectly can lead to a host of problems, including poor door performance, increased wear and tear on the components, and even potential safety hazards. For instance, improperly tensioned springs can snap under pressure, causing serious injury. In contrast, professional installers have the experience and expertise to ensure that every component is installed correctly, minimizing the risk of accidents and ensuring the door functions smoothly.

The Risks of DIY Installation

Attempting to install a garage door on your own can lead to several risks, both immediate and long-term. One of the most significant dangers is the potential for injury. Garage doors weigh hundreds of pounds, and if the door isn’t secured properly during installation, it could fall, causing serious harm. Additionally, working with the high-tension springs that lift and lower the door can be extremely dangerous. These springs store a tremendous amount of energy, and if they are not handled correctly, they can snap and cause severe injuries.

Beyond the immediate physical risks, there are other consequences to consider. A poorly installed garage door is likely to malfunction. It may not open or close smoothly, which could put stress on the opener, tracks, and other components, leading to premature failure. Additionally, many garage door manufacturers’ warranties are voided if the door is not installed by a certified professional. This means that any future repairs or replacements could come out of your pocket, costing you far more in the long run than hiring a professional installer from the start.

The Benefits of Professional Installation

Hiring a professional installer like Cincinnati Door & Window ensures that your garage door is installed correctly and safely. With over 30 years of experience in the Warren County and Butler County area, Cincinnati Door & Window has built a reputation for quality and reliability. Their team of trained professionals can typically install a garage door in just a few hours, ensuring that all safety requirements are met and that the door operates smoothly and efficiently.

Professional installers also bring the right tools and expertise to the job. They know how to handle every component of the garage door system, from the tracks to the opener to the springs. This expertise ensures that the door is not only installed correctly but also calibrated for optimal performance, which can extend the life of your garage door and reduce the need for future repairs.

Another significant benefit of professional installation is the convenience it offers. Installing a garage door on your own can take several days, especially if you run into unexpected problems or don’t have the right tools. In contrast, a professional team can get the job done quickly and efficiently, minimizing disruption to your home or business. Plus, most professional installers, including Cincinnati Door & Window, will take care of disposing of your old garage door, saving you the hassle of figuring out how to get rid of it.

Will A New Garage Door Keep All Of The Water Out Of My Garage?

By Steve Penn

Garage doors are designed to sit flat on the ground, creating a barrier that keeps most water out.New Garage Door Seals Help Keep Water Out

A new, properly installed, and adjusted garage door typically prevents water from entering your garage. However, heavy rains, blowing rains, or sloped driveways can sometimes allow water to seep in, creating a frustrating and potentially damaging situation.

If you notice water entering your garage, it may be time to inspect the seals or adjust the garage door. Over time, seals can wear out or become damaged, compromising their ability to keep water out. Adjustments may also be needed to ensure that the door sits perfectly flat on the ground. Our team at Cincinnati Door & Window can assess the situation and provide the necessary repairs to keep your garage dry.

When to Consider a New Garage Door

Will A New Garage Door Completely Seal-Out All Of The Light Coming Into My Garage?

By Steve Penn

The vinyl seals are opaque so some light will glow through. This is normal.

As long as the side and top seals rest firmly on the door, the garage door is sealed as intended.

The bottom seals on modern garage doors will seal well as long as the floor is relatively flat. Floors that are out of level or have dips or bumps of more than 1 inch may not seal completely.

Are New Garage Doors Eligible For The Energy Tax Credit?

No, garage doors are not eligible for tax credits as of January 2011. Prior to that, our insulated garage doors met or exceeded the standards required for the tax credit at that time.

Should You Get Double Pane Insulated Glass In Garage Door Windows For a Home In The Cincinnati Area?

By Steve Penn

When considering garage door windows for your home or business in the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana area, one of the decisions you’ll face is whether to opt for double pane insulated glass or stick with single pane glass.Should I Get Single Pane or Double Pane Windows on my new garage door

Let’s explore the benefits and drawbacks of each option to help you make an informed decision.

Understanding R-Value

The R-value measures a material’s ability to resist heat flow, with higher values indicating better insulation. Single pane windows typically have an R-value of about 1, while double pane windows have an R-value of around 3. On the surface, this might seem like a significant improvement, but the impact on your garage’s temperature might not be as substantial as you think.

Impact on Garage Temperature

In most cases, the difference in insulation provided by double pane glass versus single pane glass will not significantly affect the temperature of your garage. Garages are often not as well-insulated as the rest of the home, and heat can escape through other areas such as walls, ceilings, and the garage door itself. Therefore, upgrading to double pane glass might not result in a noticeably warmer garage during the winter or cooler garage during the summer.

Cost Considerations

Another important factor to consider is cost. Double pane glass can be almost double the price of single pane glass. For many homeowners and business owners, this additional expense may not justify the marginal increase in insulation, especially if the primary function of the garage is for storage or parking vehicles. Investing in other forms of insulation for the garage might provide a better return on investment.

Aesthetics and Practicality

From an aesthetic standpoint, single pane and double pane glass windows often look similar. If the primary purpose of the windows is to let in natural light and enhance the appearance of the garage, single pane glass can achieve this just as effectively as double pane glass. Additionally, single pane windows are lighter, which can be an advantage when it comes to the smooth operation of your garage door.

Making the Right Choice for Your Home or Business

Given the relatively small difference in R-value and the higher cost of double pane glass, single pane glass is usually the better choice for most homeowners and business owners in the Cincinnati area. Single pane windows provide adequate light and visibility while keeping costs down, making them a practical and cost-effective option.

However, if your garage is part of a workshop, gym, or another space where maintaining a more consistent temperature is important, double pane windows might be worth considering despite the higher cost. It all depends on how you use your garage and your specific insulation needs.

Make Us The First Call For A New Garage Door

When it comes to choosing between single pane and double pane insulated glass for your garage door windows, the decision ultimately depends on your specific requirements and budget. For most homeowners and business owners in the Cincinnati area, single pane glass is a cost-effective and practical choice that provides sufficient light and visibility without the extra expense.
